- What is relative humidity?
- “The amount of moisture in the air as compared with the maximum
amount that the air could contain at the same temperature, expressed as
a percentage.”
- Coincidently, the more heat there is, the more moisture the air will
hold. At 85 degrees with 50%
RH, there is twice as much moisture in the air as there is at 70 degrees
and 50% RH. Can we draw the
conclusion that heat is not necessarily working in our favor?
- Heat can draw moisture out of wood cells, thus, “aging” the
wood in a sound board prematurely.

- 1. Stability (Staying in tune)
- 2. Trouble-free operation (No sluggish keys, action centers, etc.)
- 3. Longevity (family heirloom)
|
|
17
|
- 1. By maintaining a
more constant RH, the wood in the piano won’t expand and contract
as much so the piano will stay in tune longer.
- By keeping RH low, the action parts will be less likely to get sluggish
or bind up.
- By keeping it more stable, the piano will last longer
