Two thirds of the journals are in binders and he is requesting funds to purchase additional binders costing $270.  Tom Levings moved to table the library discussion until the next meeting.  Amy Zilk seconded.  Motion carried with one opposed.  Matt requested that the group pursue donations of binders, and to please consider the larger question of how acquisition of new materials will best serve Chapter members.

Research & Study:

The month of May is special. I started my formal training, with the Fandrich Bros., in May....37 years ago! It doesn't seem like it's been that long, but it has. I'm actually celebrating 38 years in the piano business, because I really started with Jerry Heermans, a year before being accepted to the wonderful world of Piano Rebuilding with Del and Darrel Fandrich.

What does all of the reminiscing have to do with the title? Well, my way of thinking is that I could not have accomplished what I set out to do, unless I put forth the effort to study and research everything I could, in the course of my learning. Many, have never learned how to study. I was one of those, until I started college and found out how lacking I was. (Lazy too) In order to learn a subject, I believe you must go beyond the actual study material required. That is where Research comes in. It is not enough to practice how to set a temperament endlessly. It is adviseable to research all temperaments AND pitches AND ??? whatever else is pertinent. Like Ergonomics, perhaps? If you don't do it right, you could, physically, hurt yourself with all of that "practicing".

Where to find the pertinent information? Wow! There are so many sources these days!
The first thing that comes to mind is our library. There is a lot of good material available. In the same vein, there are the Journal CD's. Which, incidentally, cost non-Guild people and arm and a leg and are very reasonable to all the members. The old Journals, however you study them, are a HUGE source of information. The next thing is the Local Libraries. There are so many good texts available through real libraries, it's breathtaking.

Now that we're talking about doing research, lets' talk about other subjects that are pertinent to our industry: 1. Woodworking: there are gazillions of these out there! 2.Business courses, in bookkeeping, marketing, etc. This is a subject that constantly needs your attention. 3. Metallurgy: We are dealing with very sophisticated and crude forms of this subject, even if it didn't dawn on you. 4. Furniture styles and construction: it's good to have some knowledge of the artistic aspects that formed our beloved PIANO.

Well, that's the short version. I hope that you all will run out and start learning to learn and study and research. One final thing: A student who surpasses his teacher's abilities only has himself to thank. If the student surpasses the teacher, then that teacher has ceased to expand his/her horizons. Or...2. The teacher is dead.
Study On!

Notes form the Editor:

I have a couple of notes to pass on, activities of the board since the new members took office:

·      Dave Streit was very persistent and successfully got the check book signatures transfered.

·      The board via phone and email authorized sending Julie Mackkinnon some flowers and messages of support and care.

·      I have not talked to Julie, but I understand from Joe and Amy that she is progressing in her recovery.  Keep on track Julie, we all await your return!

·      Keep all of our travelers to the convention in your prayers and thoughts for safe passage.

Library Needs:

Fellow Portland Chapter members!  I am requesting you to bring to the next chapter meeting any left over (or unwanted) PTG journal binders.  We need a few of the "old 13inch tall blue" ones and about  dozen of the newer brown and blue ones!  SO, if you have a spare or more...I'll put your name in for a  candybar of your choice (donated by Matt's Piano Tuning of Salem)... raffle (one entry per binder)!  Odds or winning are based on the number of participants.  Call Matt at 503-371-8863 for Questions.

Thanks,

Matt J. Hirschfelder

President’s Message:

People are curious to know Julie MacKinnon's status. I visited with Julie and Taylor the other day because of the changeover to the new slate of officers; I had to pick up materials and records that belong to the chapter.

The following report is given with their encouragement to spread the word among all chapter members.

Julie, the immediate past president of our chapter was recently in an automobile accident which caused a severe neck injury. There was concern of paralysis developing on her left side especially in her left arm and hand.

She was rear ended by a pickup truck or SUV that only put a small dent in the bumper. The injury was severe because Julie was looking into the back seat at one of her boys at the time of impact. Her head whiplashed onto her left shoulder causing the discs in her neck to bulge on one side creating

trauma in the nerves.

She underwent surgery Wednesday, May 26th because the nerve damage was causing increased paralysis. During surgery they fused 4 vertebrae in her neck. Taylor said, "She was giggling when she came out of surgery. She kept saying 'Squeeze my hand!' and 'I can feel again!'".

When I stopped by, Julie was on her feet, although just. I didn't want to stay long and interrupt her recuperation, but I did let her know that the chapter was concerned for her health. Several people had offered personal assistance if needed, but according to the MacKinnons things are OK for now, they appreciate the concern. Julie's mother is staying with them for a

couple of weeks to help out.

We are glad the surgery was successful. Julie now has about 3 months of physical therapy ahead of her. Our thoughts and prayers are with her and her family.

I am giving this report so that the MacKinnon family is not inundated with calls for her status. They need some time to rest and recuperate. If anything changes, I'll let you know. They miss you too.

The board has voted to send Julie a bouquet of flowers and a get well card delivered by FTD. Matt Hirschfelder, our new Member Liaison will take care of the details.
